FAQ on Breast Augmentation

What is the difference between a breast augmentation and breast lift?

Breast augmentation in Singapore is done to increase the size, shape, and volume of the breasts. This is achieved by placing either breast implants or one’s own fat tissues into the breasts.

A breast lift, on the other hand, is performed to reposition and ‘lift’ the breasts, to restore their youthful position and firmness.

However, in cases where a patient would like to enhance both their breast size and position, a breast augmentation and breast lift can be combined to achieve better results.

What can I expect after a breast augmentation surgery?

After breast augmentation surgery in Singapore, you will experience initial swelling, discomfort, and minor bleeding for the first week. The pain will gradually reduce in about two weeks, allowing you to resume most light activities. By four to six weeks, the soreness and swelling will substantially decrease.

During this time, your breast augmentation surgeon will schedule regular post-operative check-ups to ensure that you are healing normally as intended.

Full recovery usually takes around six weeks to three months, depending on the patient’s natural healing process, the type of implant and technique used, as well as the patient’s adherence to aftercare.

How long do breast augmentation results last?

Depending on the type of implant used, modern breast implants can generally last for at least 10 or even up to 20 years. After which, a breast implant removal or replacement may be recommended. Your breast augmentation surgeon will be the best position to advise you on your specific case.

What are the different types of breast implants used in breast augmentation?

The two main types of breast implants include:

Silicone Breast Implants – Silicone implants are the most popular implants. Compared to saline implants, silicone implants look and feel more natural. They also have a lower likelihood of visible rippling. However, as they are pre-filled, a larger incision is needed (compared to saline implants).
The premium Motiva implant is a form of silicone implant, and our breast augmentation surgeons are one of few certified in Singapore to use them.
Saline Breast Implants – Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water only after they have been inserted. This allows for adjustable volume during the procedure, as well as a smaller incision (as they are not pre-filled). However, they may look and feel less natural compared to a silicone implant.

Where are the breast augmentation incisions made?

The type and location of the incision will depend on the patient’s preference, anatomy, the type of implant to be used, and so on. Common incisions include:

Inframammary Incision: Also known as the sub-pectoral incision, this incision is made in the fold underneath the breast. This allows for shorter incisions and hidden scars.
Periareolar Incision: This type of incision is made around the nipple-areolar complex. This is suitable for women with small breasts who do not have a fold under their breasts. The resulting scar will be hidden within the pigmented area of the areola.
Transaxillary Incision: The incision is made in the armpit or axilla and the implant is inserted either above or below the pectoral muscle. This approach leaves no scars on the breast itself.

Can I get a breast augmentation without implants?

Yes, breast augmentation can be done through fat grafting, also known as autologous breast augmentation or fat transfer. In this procedure, the patient’s own fat is taken from other parts of their body (e.g. hips, stomach, or thighs) through liposuction. These fat tissues are then processed and purified before being injected into their breasts.

Fat grafting to the breasts results in a more natural look and feel compared to implants. However, it can only allow for a modest improvement in breast size.
